Lord Krishna being born?
How can an Immortal Omnipotent God, believed to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, be born?
Yes, the Lord made his appearance in this world (in Dwapar Yuga), being born into the royal family of Mathura, the capital of the Yadavas or Surasenas. He was the eighth son of Vasudeva and Princess Devaki. Mathura’s King Ugrasena was dethroned by Devaki’s brother Kamsa who became the King. Life threats of King Kamsa by Devaki’s eighth child made Kamsa imprison Vasudeva and Devaki. Yet on the stormy night when Sri Krishna was born, Vasudeva managed to escape with the new-born and crossed River Yamuna to Gokul. Thus Krishna was raised in Gokul (near Vrindavana) by His foster parents Yasoda and Nanda.
As says Bhavishya Purana, Krishna was born as a result of “mental transmission” from Vasudeva’s mind to Devaki’s womb.

Scriptures and astrological calculations date Krishna’s birth back to 3228 B.C. (either on 18thJuly or 21st July) on the midnight of the eight day of the waning moon phase in the month of Shravana. This day is thus called Janmasthami, or Gokul Asthami, or Sri Krishna Jayanti.
The Rohini constellation (Aldebaran) is on its ascent on this day.
Although Krishna literally means dark, various texts and scriptures give different interpretations of the name, like, “Attractive Existence”, “Existence of Bliss”, etc. Krishna has many attributes and known by many different names.
Some of these are:
Parampurush: The Supreme Lord
Muralidharan: One who holds a flute
Niranjan: The Honourable One
Nara-Narayan: The one who is also Nara (Man) and Narayan (God or Vishnu)
Murari: Demon Mura’s enemy
Krishna is most often referred to as Govinda (meaning Lord of Cows) and Gopal (One who is a Protector of Cows). This is because Krishna had spent His childhood in Gokul with the cow-herds. Kanha and SriHari are the other names most commonly used for the Lord. He is also known as Dwarakadish – King of Dwarka as He had set up His kingdom later in Dwaraka (Gujarat).
God Krishna bears some resemblance to the Western God Apollo.

Reference to Krishna is found in many scriptures like the Puranas (Bhagavat Purana, Vishnu Purana, Brahma Vaivarta Purana etc), Yaska’s Nirukta, Mahabharata and Harivansa, etc. Although there is no direct reference to Krishna in texts like Rig Veda, but appearance of “Drapsa Krishna” or “black drop” of RV 8.96.13 is ‘the very same Krishna’ as pointed out by Ramakrishna Gopal Bhandarkar and others.
It is the Epic Mahabharata, where Krishna is featured as a personality, the Avatar of Vishnu. The advices of the Lord to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, comprise the eighteen chapters of the sixth book (or Bhishma Parva) of this great epic. This is the most revered sacred text Bhagavat Gita. Lord Krishna is Arjun’s charioteer in the battle field and is thus known as Partha Sarathi. Arjuna is referred to Partha (son of Pritha) and Sarathi means chariot-companion. So He is Arjuna’s companion in the battle-field.
